I have a 84ss with a 87gn 2004r trans. Just wondering if putting in a computer from a 87ss would be better. Have hear that they have upgraded tuning? Any bennifits? Or just try the 87 chip in the 84 computer? Thanks in advance, Chris

This has been brought up before. The 87 SS would work fine in your 84 SS but you won't notice any differece really driving it.
If you can find a ZZ4 chip & 87 ecm you can delete the EGR and I think the smog parts.

I don't think an 87 ECM will work without the emissions stuff. Sure doesn't in my car!

i know you can delete the smog pump without throwing a check engine light, and the cat conv can be deleted too with out the check engine light coming on. haven't tried it without egr, but i think that would throw the light.

Drove it today and did not have any issues with it in town but when on the hi-way doing 80 mph I did get a check eng. light. It threw the egr code but seemed to run just fine?

You can run different computers in different years as long as the chip matches the ECM year for year. Removing the smog pump/AIR system or cat will not throw a code.

The 87/88 ECM is known to erroneously cause the EGR code. It's been brought up before, and I believe there was even a GM tech bulletin back in the day regarding it. I also got the famous EGR code on the highway when I had an 87 ECM in my Monte(s).

So I guess that I will just have to give the key a flick and reset the computer on the highway and see what it does after it sets the EGR code? Thanks, will look for the zz4 chip sounds like that is the key to all of this.

The ZZ4 chip with an 87 ECM will work fine for you, that is what I run in my 85 never once had a light come on yet.....I have gutted cat, no AIR and definitely no EGR as I run the ZZ4 motor too, which is why I swapped my ECM. ZZ4 chip won't work in pre 87 ECM's, something in processer speed difference or something.......

I got the chip from GM I don't remember the part number but PM Jay (Doc) he can help find the part number
