my buddy's '84 grand prix seems like it is having a little starting trouble...when he goes to start the car it seems like the car is struggling to turn it over..though it does turn over..it kinda seems weak...like if it was a dying battery, but i think the battery is good...do starters slowly die or do they just die at once?

I've had em go out both ways. If the battery is definitely good, I'd go ahead a put a new (or rebuilt) starter in it... may save a major headache some night in the middle of nowhere, but that's just me.

I had a starter do just that. It would turn the motot over slowly, but wouldn't start. It would drain the battery real fast too! Put a rebuilt starter on there, and charged the battery and all was good.

If the armature (the part that spins in the starter) has a short to ground it will spin slowly, have no torque and drain the battery.I'd check for bad connections at the battery first. You can do a voltage drop test on the starter.Put a Volt meter across the battery. The voltage shouldn't drop below 9 volts while cranking. If the battery is good and it drops way below that, the starter is no good.
