I have a weird electrical problem.
Car: 87 Aerocoupe - stock
Background:
Last year we diagnosed the alternator as having a bad diode, as long as the car was cranked once a week, no problem. If it went 2 weeks with being cranked, the battery would be dead.
That battery gave it up in late October, it was 5 years old.
Installed new battery on a Monday afternoon, drove the car the next day, Tuesday. Went to crank it Friday and the battery was graveyard dead.
Installed new battery Sunday and pulled all fuses to see if anything had a major draw. The interior lights draw 3 amps with the doors open, and there is a 1 amp draw with the doors closed and the key out of the ignition. The ECM draws several volts, but this should not cause a problem as this is for memory purposes.

I need to know what the amperage draw should be for these cars. I despise electical problems, they always end up with me hanging upside down under the dash.

Any and all ideas, hints and help are greatly appreciated.

Well, did you repace the alternator with the bad diode?

Sorry, I forgot to add we took it to be rewound and the man said it was fine. He could take our money, but it would be a waste.

best thing to do is get the draw up, get someone in the car with the doors closed, starting with acc fuse, pull them one by one until draw drops or disapears, find wiring diag for particular ciruit and trace to component. that has worked for me in the past. if no fuse pull drops draw ,you are grounding out somewhere in main power circuit. from batt to alt etc.

Soem guys have had electrical draws from that rectangular black plug on the passenger side, by the valve cover. They said that the terminals were corroded inside, and would drain it. Don't ask me why, or how, I just remembeer reading it. I think that it's only there for assembly reasons too. I'm hard-wiring mine when I put my engine back together this winter.

you should have less than 1 amp with the the car off and all doors closed. The retanglular plug is the power source for the HIGH speed on the blower motor, yours is corroded I promise, they all are. Pull it apart and rewire it. If that doesnt help go to Advance Auto Parts, they have a tester that will read amps with the car off, pull fuses until amps drop below 1.

I had this problem in my car. It turned out to be the exciter wire on the alternator (the wire to turn the alternator on). Try this, remove the clip from the top of the alternator and see if the draw goes away as mine did. I had to run another wire to the alternator off the fuse panel becuase I could not locate the short. Good luck.
