Aloha guys. Simple question.

I'm trying to restore the center console. My SS was originally bench seat/column shift car that was converted to bucket seat/floor shift car. Console I have is from my previous ride, G-body Gutless. Gutless had pretty much same setup with 60/40 split seat with column shift. So I just took the whole setup from Gutless when I trashed the car (long story. don't ask...........................). Reason for Gutless console.

Anyway, my question is, do I paint the center console or do I dye it?

When I dyed/painted my console gauge pod I was really happy with this.

Same here, great results. I touched up a few of the interior plastic pieces as well, prefect match.

Years ago went to the local body shop supply and had a pint of SEM hard surface interior gray mixed to the color code of the 86. Have used it many times to repaint cluster, console, even the cup holder. A Prevail sprayer was used.

I would guess that most economical choice today would be getting a spray can from Mike. Haven't used it but if picky Frank and Brent say it good I would go that route.

I do know that when SEM offered interior paint there was a hard surface and soft surface formula. Not sure how soft surfaces such as the console lid would react to hard surface paint. But I trust what Mike has to say.

SEM Color coat is for vinyl surfaces, flexible and rigid plastics, carpet and velour and SEM Classic coat can be used on vinyl and leather. Ive used both in GM black (can't remember number) on a truck interior and both were excellent.

In my opinion what Mike sells is just as good. Sprays good, so far great durability, and good color match.

I have only used aerosol cans from the 3 products. On mikes I have only used it on hard plastic. Its just like any other automotive paint process, prep is the key.

Thanks guys.

Just one problem. I can't get that stuff because I live on the island. No HAZMAT.

I'll try local NAPA and see if they can put that in their spray can.

Yup...prep is the key. Friend of mine painted the interior door panels of his S10 with products purchased locally. I'll ask him what he used and the process involved.

^^^exact quote from a car buddy...sorry no response as to which paint product used. I know Rust-Oleum and Duplicolor have a "vinyl and fabric" line that may be obtained locally but recently I've noticed that the big box stores seem to only bring in the common colors. i.e. primary/secondary I wonder if big box stores would bring it in if you order it??? As the text discussion went on, seems like big emphasis was on the prep again. There's some good youtube videos as far as application goes.

I used Naptha to clean the parts after scuffing. Then, I applied SEM adhesion promoter before applying the SEM color.

Last time I touched that stuff was when I was repairing fiberglass panels on a helicopter...~late '80s.

Here's another suggestion from handyman57..."depending on how much stuff your friend going spray, he can get the exact color matched and mixed then put into spray cans at Hi Line Distributors. The downside is this is an expensive route but eliminates mismatch."

Update: ran into a mechanic friend at JBPHH auction...posed the same question and the response was, "Because it's a paint, it won't hold up to rubbing against it over time, make sure the item is super clean, wipe em down with acetone. Sherwin Williams carries SEM products."
