I need to repaint the top of my core support. I have already done all the prep work.

Was the original paint a gloss black or a satin black?

Thanks Robert. That makes it easier for me. I have some VHT epoxy satin black that takes a week to cure, or gloss Rustoleum that takes months to cure.

Eastwood calls it semi-gloss, I suppose another way of saying satin black, half way between gloss and matte or what used to be called flat.

Thank you for the link, but now I am more confused. They have aerosol matte and aerosol satin, as well as low gloss brush-on.

The satin paint I have is in between flat and gloss, so it may be OK. It looks similar to the replacement air box cover I got from Mike's Montes, though the cover is powder coated.

My core support is factory color. The airbox top had rust and I had it painted ppg defleet semi gloss black. It was pretty close. I was happy with it.

Your core support looks glossier than satin.

Are the fresh air intake duct bracket and bracket that holds the hood latch also the same finish as the core support?

Was the airbox cover also the same finish as the core support, before you had it refinished?

It was glossier, it was a semi gloss. Everything in that picture is factory oem color except for airbox. Yes everything is same color.

Personally, I've always used Satin!

I would say it's a satin from the factory.

I'm thinking it was a satin and one of those quick drying blacks they used on these cars. There are several different blacks, the air dam, support. I think even inside the air damn is a different paint. Different venders supplied various parts, different paints.

I personally like Rustoleum Professional gloss black, always have a can or two on the shelf . Very durable, after a few washing luster is good. Most everything under the hood is that, with the exception of a few cans of Hirsch black engine paint.
https://www.rustoleum.com/product-c...pray?ls=239107&lc=Semi-Gloss%20Black

One thing i found about some of the GM blacks is when you feather sand a spot and spray you may get grazing at edges of the old paint. My air dam top had a quarter size area that had blistered/rusted from the bottom up, viewed from the front near the top right corner. Without removing the panel cut a 1 1/2" square section out, welded in a new piece and spot sprayed some primer. To fix the rest of the panel a wet sanding with no primer when I saw some steel. They grazed a little and required several sandings and thin coats of paint to flash quick. Once I had adhesion the whole panel could be shot with no grazing. The paint used was that quick drying Rustoleum Prof. Obviously that wasn't a one day project.

Bob, does your Rustoleum Professional semi gloss black look like Brent's pictures?

If so, I may get some. I like that it states it dries quickly. It isn't the Stops Rust line, which takes weeks/months to cure in my experience, but when cured it is very durable.

I already sprayed it with Rustoleum Rust Converter spray after a thorough sanding to rid of the surface rust and rusty scratches.

Most all of my spraying with the Rust Prof has been with the gloss black. I found it a little harder to find all the various colors/shades of Prof. The Depo and Lowes usually only have it in gloss black and white. Being a 15oz can instead of 12 it's easy to spot on the shelf, taller.
One thing i really like is tack time for second coat is 15-20 minutes. I just painted a wheel bearing dust cap with the gloss black, two hours later baked it in the oven for about an hour at 220 and installed the cap the next morning.

Love the stuff, been using it for many years now. At the shop there is a shelf with 40 different spray cans, all the various manufactures, SEM, Eastwood, Krylon, Rust, Duplicolor, and more, my favorite is the Prof for fast, hard, durable last forever finish. I sprayed the B-body brake booster with it 20+ years ago, still looks great.

I bought some Rustoleum Professional Semi-Gloss Black at Lowes, today.

I first checked my local Walmart website and my local Ace website and they didn't have it, but Lowes did so I had to go to Lowes, but I got it. I will spray it tomorrow and compare to the VHT epoxy satin black.

I already media blasted and sprayed one of the hood hinges with the satin black, and it looks very good. Fortunately, the run will be hard to spot with the spring reinstalled.

My first coat is very light, minimum paint to get coverage, Make sure it tacks before a light second. If you spray an area that is for show a third wet coat can be laid down. Like any enamel to much, to quick, sags and runs.

Hope you like the results

I sanded the top of the core support, removing as much of the rust as I could. I cleaned it with naphtha. Then I sprayed a coat of Rustoleum Rust Converter. Then, I applied 2 light coats and 1 heavy coat of Rustoleum Professional Semi-Gloss black.

I media blasted and painted the saddle for the hood latch and the bracket that holds that fresh air duct.

Is the core support too glossy? It does look a lot like Brent's picture.

I compared the painted saddle for the hood latch to another that I had, after degreasing it, and to the VHT epoxy satin black I applied to one of the hood hinges.

Anyone???

Is the core support too glossy? It think it does look a lot like Brent's picture, but would like to be sure before I begin putting the car back together.
