Well summer is here and I should be racing, but I went a little nuts, I'm blaming the pandemic.

After saving my pennies I made some big purchases for the car.

First I decided that I wanted to pull the AR5 and the FABbot Fab manual transmission kit for a T-56 Magnum. It's not that the AR5 is a bad transmission and for many people who just want a cruiser with a stick, it would be a great choice, but I want to actually get out there and road race my car more, so I wanted something to beat on, hence the T-56 magnum.

And I figured while I was in there, I might as well toss LS3 heads onto my LQ4, but that turned into buying an aluminum LS3 core to rebuild as an 11:1 compression, big cam (237/248 @.050, .625/.605 lift) fancy coated king bearings, ARCA valvetrain, and special oil control bits so it will rev out to 7000+ rpm and make 580-590ish HP.

I also finally got around to installing the 750lb springs I purchased from QA1 for my coil over kit, I installed them on the car, and I hate the way that it sits now, So I decided I was going to rip all the QA1 front suspension stuff off the car and replace it with UMI cornermax kit.

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress and the goal is to make the Peru Cam challenge with the car.

Man, when I get bored, I end up watching an extra show or two on Netflix. You decided to replace everything except the body and frame (although it's still early, that frame might go too if you aren't careful...)

Just kidding, sounds like you are going top have a fun next round of modifications. Keep us posted, I'm sure you will.

Sounds like fun.

Now I need to look up the UMI cornermax kit…

I plan to stick with just new front UMI arms in winter for my LS, that accept shocks/springs and coilovers, if I someday go that direction. Trying to show some restraint.

Got the motor built this past weekend, with the exception of the valve train still waiting on rockers so that I can measure pushrods.

Nice. I really like that tunnel ram style Ilmor intake. Should make good mid and high end power with that cam.

That's the hope! the other hope is that it fits under the stock hood confused

Made some more progress..

Got the old motor out
[Linked Image]

Got the new motor and trans in
[Linked Image]

worked on the wiring
[Linked Image]

got the headers and rad installed.

fired it up for brief moment to check oil pressure - 60 psi cold at 1500 rpm

Now I'm waiting on a driveshaft then I can get the ecu tuned. it also looks like the intake might fit under the hood with some slight modification to the inner structure of the hood.

Nice! Did you figure out the wiring issue that was bugging you?

Yep! single bad crimp the Deutsch connector harness I made. Wasn't getting ignition 12v. Once I fixed that it cranked right over.

Well,

I ran into a problem once I got the car started up and running. Oil pressure hot wasn't anywhere near it was supposed to be. I dropped the oil and cut the filter and found oodles and oodles of bearing material in the oil.

Pulled the motor and pan, found that the rear thrust surface of the #3 main was wiped out. Did more research and found out that American Powertrain has incorrect info regarding the proper pilot bearing. This bad info cost me ~$1300

The simple way is to simply measure if your pilot bearing sticks past your bellhousing edge more than 1/4-3/8 of an inch, you need an early style LS1 needle roller bearing pilot bearing, NOT the later sealed type deep grove ball bearing. American power train says that any vehicle made after 2012 uses the later style, I was using a T-56 magnum (a TR6060 with a different tail shaft) and the bellhousing from a 2015 Chevrolet SS, So you'd think that it would use the later type bearing... it apparently does not.

So after ripping the motor out, getting a new crank, getting that crank balanced and polished, a new set of main bearing, rod bearings, and a complete disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of the engine....

It's back in and running great. I don't love the hot idle oil pressure ~30psi, but I've heard to expect lower idle oil pressure with aluminum block LS motors, but by 1200-1300 rpm I have 45+ psi. I still have rev limiter to 5800 rpm for break in of the trans and clutch.

Once I get some more road miles on it, I'll get it dynoed and tuned.

I still need to patch the hole in the floor from the AR5 and T-56 installation, and figure out a boot/console situation, but other than that the car is running and driving well.

The engine is very responsive with the light dual disc and tiny damper and 1:1 e-throttle.

Ouch. Well, glad you got it figured out and have a good combo in it now, bummer that you had to find out the hard/expensive way frown

Got the car on the dyno today

466 HP and 451 ftlbs, power was a little down from what I expected, but torque was up. Likely this is due to the intake and its long runners. Might try something different down the road, but for now I'm happy with the power.
