i have 2 86 ss'. one is open rear end one is posi rear end
the open rear-end car has a spare

the posi rear end car is missing a spare

did the rear end(posi or non) determine the spare tire size?

what is the factory spare tire size? i'm assuming they would be different sizes for 15inch super sport wheels vs 14 inch steel wheels

i think i may have known this information, but i have slept and drank since then..lol

If I recall the posi cars have a bigger diameter spare tire, but don't remember seeing pictures, just seeing it talked about online. I could check my Monte's, both have what I believe to be the factory spare tires, one is a G80 car the other isn't. But you could be right in that the SS might have a larger diameter one anyways.

Personally I would get a full size spare. Through the downside with a full size spare is it won't fit in the spare tire well.

The 14" tire is a 195/75x14 and it was 25.5" tall. The SS 15" tire was a 215/65x15 and it was 26" tall. I really doubt GM had two different size spare tires, one for the 14" and one for the 15". Also doubt posi has anything to do with a spare tire.

My spare in the 86 SS has been out maybe two times to clean it and vac out the "pit" in 30 years. Never for a flat. But recently before the trek to UMI KOTM the spare was pull to check OD and it was the same size as the 26" tall tire I run.
Also the spare fits the 12" rotor and Wilwood caliper with no problem.

You never know, a spare is a good thing. Some of these cars today have no spare, a can of slime has replaced it.

Mine is a non-SS, 14" rim model, no posi. The original spare was the space-saver type, but I can't recall the size. I'm the second owner, and I doubt the old lady before me would have changed it out for any reason. By memory, it didn't seem as big as the full size wheel/tire, but I pulled it out 10 years ago and replaced it with one of the factory steel wheels when I upgraded to the SS396 rims on there now and I've slept/drank since then too... I couldn't get the hold-down bracket to work with the full size (195/70-14), but it fit fine.

thanks bob

just using some of the eBay current and sold ads,for research.
where a 85 SS monte spare was listed, they used the vin number in the ad listing,
ad reads 16inch spare
for the ss vin the spare tire size was listed as

155/80/16 Mini Spare

the same seller lists another ad, 15x4 with a vin of a 87 monte carlo non ss but does not list the exact size of the spare, just as a 15x4
i can barely make out from the zoom feature but looks like it is 135/80/15

again all eBay research, maybe others would be able to shed more light

I would not trust a 30 year old tire, that old of a spare could blow out if you ever use it.

Grand national use a 155/80/16 for posi.
I believe the 145/80/16 come from a 88 ss if I remember.

My original non-posi donut spare was tiny. I replaced it with a larger diameter donut spare I got from Pic-N-Pull.. I'll get size next time I open the trunk.

For sure. The last LS parts car I had was a G80 car with 3.08's, forget the original wheel option it had but a non SS couldn't get 15".

Original spare in my 85 SS is marked T125/70D15. I have factory 15" rally wheels.

As a matter of fact, I just decided to replace it and Discount Tire carries that size.
