From the back side of the door panel, on each of the switch is a spring clip, they need to be compressed to release the switch, the switch will then push out the front, Sometimes they are a PITA.

so does the panel need to come off again or can i push something like a butterknife under the bezel to get it to release?

The steel spring clips push against the cardboard backing to the door panel. Some may have pulled the switch through the cardboard but damage to the cardboard is the result. Best to pull the panel and remove without damaging the edges of the panel hole.
Also the clips attachment to the plastic body of the switch is fragile, can break those off if not careful.

Sorry, forgot the door lock switch is actually in the plastic of the lower panel, was thinking about the window switch. But still need to be careful with removal.
