When I removed the interior from my 1987 aerocoupe, there were some black plastic strips covering the pinch welds by the rear window. I remember they seem to have originally been attached with contact cement, but when I took the interior apart, they weren't really attached to anything.

I need to put the interior back together, but am unsure how to attach these plastic strips, and don't understand what they attach to.

Can anyone help?

Marc

Sounds like Cars and Concepts installed the plastic strips to hide the pinch weld..so it gives it a finished look. Glues and adhesives don't last 32 yrs.
Unless you are doing a 100 point correct restoration, it doesn't sound like the plastic strips are needed.

Without the strips, it looks like something is missing.

Marc, I'm looking at pics of my '87 aero when we stripped it for frame off. Not sure what you are looking at. Visible when assembled or not? Picture? Whatever it was we did not consider it important and did not add it back. Glad to look again.

Hi Gordon-

Here are pictures of the plastic strips and where they go, relative to the sail panel. They are probably cut from standard profile 1987 stock, rather than extruded for this purpose.

They were glued to the car, somehow, and the beaded edge was hidden by the sail panel, as in the second picture. There doesn't seem to be any place to glue them to except the pinch weld, which isn't much surface area.

They were badly warped and curved from sun and time, as well as likely shrunken shorter than original. I used a heat gun to straighten and lengthen them and they are much better, but still a little crooked and warped.

The pictures are rotated from how they are saved. frown

Lets see that back on the car. I have an Aero, but mine never had those. Neither of my Aeros had them.

Don't recall having seen these when disassembling the car for restoration. We painted the seams black and I will give thought to covering them up as you are going to. Wonder if a previous owner inserted them or if other owners have seen these? Perhaps they were glued to the metal seam and not the panel itself? Let us know how this goes back together.

They were some how glued to the seam (not much surface area); that side of the strip was covered in contact cement. The side that faced the sail panel was clean. One of the strips was falling out and I thought it may have been the black rubber damping material, but it was the plastic strip.
