Over the last year of ownership I have noticed occasional gas fumes( near the rear) smell once I parked in the garage. I just removed the gas tank to check the lines above it and change the filter. I plan to replace the rubber hoses even thought they look good. There appear to be more rubber connections behind the heat shield. Even though the car chassis has been well oiled all it's life(no winters) I suspect there might be a problem with either the rubber or metal line behind the shield. The tank top surface and lines are oily but it's possible the oil spray did not get the lines behind the shield. I'll post pics later.

Is your vapor recovery system working properly? Should be a check valve on the engine that uses vacuum pull gas vapors from the charcoal canister which stores vapors from the gas tank. The vented gas cap could also be the source of gas odor.

Checked the gas cap - it holds vacuum
the vapor canister does not emit a gas smell and the filter has been renewed.
I look for the check valve.

the fuel smell drifts out from the rear wheelwell area, not from the filler/license plate areas but it is intermittent.
Last November the tank was filled up. In May the level had dropped to 7/8 without being used.

I'm going to pressurize the tank and coat it in soapy water just to confirm the seams and the intake seal are good. I replaced the filter, seal and lock ring.
