Hey guys, I know I'm new here (just discovered the site) I've owned two SS, an 87 that was black, grey interior and red stripe, and a black 88 with tan interior and tan stripes. I always thought the tan was more rare, but never knew for sure, is there any data on this anywhere?

This has been discussed before. AFAIK, the black with tan guts is indeed rare but GM production stats on option combinations is not available. Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately as upflying mentioned, GM/Chevrolet didn't keep data on this. They have records of all vehicle invoices I believe, you can order them so it must be the case, but no database keeping track. The best idea is using the SS registry on this site and getting a good ballpark figure.

From playing with the numbers I show:

1987 - 461 "stock" SS's registered, 160 are black, 20 are black/saddle
1988 - 162 "stock" SS's registered, 52 are black, 9 are black/saddle

So I would say roughly 5% of 87/88 SS's are black/saddle, with 103,167 SS's made in those years it's 5,000 or so in that combo...give or take of course but probably not all that far off.

Thanks for your replies guys. I still remember when these cars first came out in 1983, and going to look at one in a dealership with one of my friends (I think we were 17?). At that time I was driving my first car, a 1974 Vega that had a 3.8L (229 Chevy V6) that I built in my basement with my Dad, putting in a marine engine cam, matched springs, pocket ported/port matched heads I did myself in my basement, a holley 4bbl manifold and 450cfm carb, and an HEI distributor that was recurved at a shop in gasoline alley in Paterson. I remember looking at the Monte's through the showroom window and being disappointed in the horsepower. Lol still fond memories, the eighties were tough for horsepower. I can only imagine a new rendition with an LS motor, I'd buy one in a heartbeat smile

Just ran the numbers for black/gray 87' and 88's and based on what we have, which isn't a ton of data, the black/gray is almost hard to find as black/saddle. 15 in 87' and 16 in 88' . Seems for 86' it's fairly common though, or closer to 50/50 than the black/burgundy combo that is the most common.

Thanks for looking that up. They were both good cars, although I hated the computer feedback carb and the 200R4. Like I said, the eighties were tough for horsepower, and technology at that time was moving quickly. Another nice G body I had was a Pontiac Gran Prix 2+2 with only 8 thousand miles on it. Unfortunately the (only available powerplant) LG4 motor in it.

Yep the 80's were low horsepower transition years from carb to FI and OBDI ECM's. Engineers were trying to figure out MPG, emissions and horsepower. None agreed with each other. Like playing video games on an Atari console. So we have the Monte Carlo SS, a car with go fast looks. Thankfully the LS engines were the tech of the future and just what the doctor ordered..

I would say uncommon but not rare. But that's my opinion. I had an '88 Black/Tan. Only extra options it had was AC, console and buckets. No T-tops, PW, PL, tilt. cruise etc.

Current owner of a Black/Tan T-topped Aerocoupe. I can't take it anywhere without people checking it out and doing the stories..."I had one in the day but not this color", "Fan/not a fan of Aerocoupe's", "mine got stolen"...etc
Welcome aboard!

Black and Tan owner here. Definitely seen more Black and Tan than white and Tan like aerocoupe mentioned. Still...I'll never do a black interior because of how rare tan in general is. Every time I see a Black and Tan monte with the factory stripes at a show I want to put stripes back on mine and my wife does too...but the paint is kinda crap and I feel like I'd be wasting a stripe kit lol

Yes I had a black/saddle 87 Aerocoupe, was beautiful, I prefer black cars myself. they may be a pita to keep clean but nothing is as sharp as black imo. Sold the 87 aero shortly after I bought the 86 Aerocoupe, at the time couldn't afford both. would have loved to kept it though

As soon as I saw mine on the dealers lot I had to buy it. I've always liked that color combo the best.

If I had a black or white with saddle interior it would need to have the stock stripes as well. I generally like the MCSS stripes but depending on the cars look can go with or without, without moreso on the black SS's, but not this combo smile . Still would like to see a white/saddle with gold stripe SS with gold GTA's.

If a member puts a black/saddle or white/saddle up for sale on the forum, I'll try to jump in it faster than a hobo on a ham sammich.. well until my wife sees it and tells me no.

My favorite color combo, hands down. They still pop up time to time. Most of them look like the cl ad above... rode hard and put up wet.

I just recently bought a 1987 Monte Carlo SS black with saddle interior but has been repainted so it don't have the stripes and it also has T-Top and has a 5.3L ls swap in it with 4 wheel disc brakes and a posi. Been considering going black interior but after seeing a few people of different sites talk about that combo being slightly rare. I'm thinking I may keep the saddle interior.
