So I remember seeing this thread by JAWSS: http://www.montecarloss.com/community/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=811431 which I liked at the time, didn't really pursue it or think much of it but filed it in the back of my mind for maybe someday, fast forward to this June and I saw JAWSS old SS for sale on a FB group (car looked the same) and it put a spark in my behind. I looked online and happened to find a yard with an 06' that had them (the Recaro option isn't common), no pics nor could they provide any so I made the one hour trip and was pleasantly surprised, pretty good shape and the car was still sealed up, didn't look like it had been there too long. $200 for the pair. A little dirty but not too bad and only normal wear and some very minor damaged spots. Now the fun of getting them to fit and fit properly. I always wonder with so many people putting in newer seats in g-bodies, I know some here have really well thought out modifications and tracks but some, especially on FB, I often wonder how they are slapped in (wood and self tapping screws?).

[Linked Image]

So I went to work, creating a cardboard template to compare the Cobalt tracks to the mount locations for the g-body. First step was to remove the Cobalt front "hooks" on the front, two larger rivets to drill out and remove:
[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Bought some 16 gauge steel at Menards in small sections, cut using my templates, trying to make big enough to retain strength but not be too obnoxious looking and used original holes in the Cobalt track, the rear most holes that are bolted to the floor of the Cobalt and the 2nd(or 3rd?) from front hole already in the track, where the front hooks were located. Had an extra passenger seat track from a split bench and used that as the donor for seat mounts. Cut the front mounts off and drilled out the rear rivets. Used Grade 8 5/16" bolts with locknuts (thickness of stock Cobalt track holes) to attach the plates to the track.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

The width of the seat is pretty good and when centered is just fine for clearance to the console and door panel, at least in my test fitting so far. The height seemed a little taller especially in front, possibly in part due to the stock seats having a little more give when sitting down. I'm 5'11" and measured about 3" between my head and the headliner. So I went to work modifying the front mounts, pretty crude method but compressing in a bench vice then cutting the top a bit to help keep it level and also to shorten it a bit more. Still retained some of the u channel for strength. Overall this seems to have made the brackets about 1.5-2" shorter. Getting a wrench around the nut will bit a little more tedious but still accessible. This is where the project currently "sits" (haha).

Next is test fitting in the car and possibly some adjustments although I hope this fits/sits well. If so I might have the feet welded to the bracket and look to make the brackets a bit stronger, welding some strategically placed steel rods or tubing or another plate for thickness. Not too much give all put together, will see when bolted in how it is.

Most expensive workbench......

Good work so far, interested in seeing them installed. Probably one of the cheapest ways to get embroidered Recaro's in an SS.

Once nice thing about having less than show quality paint to put it nicely..and my work bench's are already full of parts/tools that need to be organized some more.

Here is the passenger seat installed. Sits nicely, can't really move it any further back, so if anyone is really tall that might be an issue, but not many 6'4"+ people riding shotgun in my car, if ever. Can move it up plenty. Good height and clearances on the sides. Could maybe lower the rear an inch or so but not sure it's worth the effort. It is fairly sturdy but I bought some 1"x1/4" steel to make an X brace between the floor mounts to help make it more solid, I think that's about as far as I can go. Can still put on the feet/base covers but the front might need to be modified a bit, have plenty of spares laying around to use for that.

Worked on cleaning them up(right side just cleaned, left not so much), moved them to my basement/work area where I'll finish reinforcing the passenger seat with an X brace and copy the setup to the driver seat sometime over winter. Were dirty enough before and after sitting in the garage since the middle of summer, didn't get any cleaner. Also realized the sides/back are vinyl, the inner supports are leather though.

These are from an 06' I believe. Forget the exact years they came in, only the earlier supercharged versions, not the later turbocharged ones, IIRC.

I have a 2010 HHR SS. The seats aren't Recaro but they almost look the same. It's an option to look at. They feel very good, and do give good lateral support. Hook up the electric and they are adjustable.

That would be news to me, Recaro seats? The Saturn Ion Redline I believe, same platform as the Cobalt, could get the optional Recaro's as well, same seat minus the SS embroidery.

I never knew any other models besides the Cobalt SS could get Recaro's. Some Saturn Ion's did as well, identical Recaro seat without the SS on it, but same platform. Trailblazer SS's all have either cloth or leather (more common) seats with the SS embroidered, but no Recaro option.

I've been working on these this winter, this weekend close to finishing them up, the next step is test fitting/tweaking if necessary, hopefully nothing more than minor tweaks. Lots of time into these and it's not pretty underneath but solid, the X brace added really stiffens them up. The metal is 3/4" wide and 3/8" thick (1/4" thick on the first one I used, either choice is pretty healthy).

Would be cool to have the middle sections recovered in the original velour fabric to match the rest of the interior. Maybe something to consider, hmm. .

The Saturn Redline had the Recaros. Same car as the Cobalt SS, but had suicide rear doors.

I knew it was some sort of Saturn, Ion, Redline or Ion-Redline?

Ion Redline. The Redline was built first, taken to the Nurburgring for tuning, then the Cobalt SS was introduced based on the Redline earlier build. Just a bunch of Saab parts in both cars.

They seem to be neat cars, years ago I contemplated the idea of finding a clean used one as a daily, but it seems few and far between aren't modified/beaten on by "kids" even now when they turn up for sale signs of a hard life are evident. And when sitting in one when new at a car show (forget the line, not a Recaro seat SS) the interior felt a little chintzy.

In 05 my daughter stopped at the Chevy dealer, saw a black Cobalt SS that was just delivered and had her mind set to buy it. The next day I took a look at it, neat car, except summer only 200 a piece Pirelli P Zero tires on 18" wheels. With very limited tire options, all 200 bucks in that size, I sent her to the Saturn dealer. The next day she brought home a demo Redline for the day, a quick spin around the block and I thought what a cool car for a girl who just graduated from college. So the demo went back to the dealer and was replaced by a brand new blue Redline. The Redline came with 17" wheels, 25 tires to chose from in that size. That car was fun to drive. She traded it in 4 years later for a GTP Comp G Grandprix, more room for car seats.
Daughter's that like quick cars, priceless, as long as daddy can service it.

Sounds like she takes after her father cool . Don't see many Cobalt SS's around anymore or the Redline's, although those might blend in a little more at least to my eye. Coworker had a "sharp" blue Cobalt SS but it was just the N/A version, 4 door too. Until then didn't know they offered the SS package for mechanically plain Cobalt's.

Ya, daughter likes cars, and son races Saabs, autox, rallyx, hillclimb and has done a few Lemons events, even ran the road course at Putnam park once. The grand kids are now 8 and 4, they like to ride in the 86. But was hoping they wouldn't get the car disease. By the time they get a license most cars will be electric. I don't want to work on an electric Honda.

Pics from this weekend, drivers seat loosely installed, so far more sturdy with the X bracing, seems to have good clearance of everything like when I did the passenger side and height/feel. Look forward to warmer weather when I pull it outside and can put both seats in and bolt them down to finish any other tweaks.
