I know there are many variables to this but I'd like a ballpark estimate.

Let's say my 305 blows up tomorrow and I need to replace it. How much would I need to spend for the following options? Parts & Labor

1) Price for a used 305 and have someone swap them?

2) Price for a used 350 and have someone swap them?

3) Price for something brand new and a little beefier than the 305 and have someone install it?

I'm clueless about all of this and have no need for it but I'm just wondering for down the road.

I only paid $250 for my 305 plus 2004r used, but that was 10 years ago and I installed it myself.

There is no easy answer to your question.
If you buy a used engine you have no idea on the actual condition of that engine, and quite possibly no guarantee if something goes wrong.
I'm not sure about your area but around here the 1st generation small blocks,ie;305's and 350's are getting scarce.
If you go the newer route with an LS swap there are other associated costs such as wiring harnesses and transmission controllers.
Then there is labour costs. The more you can do yourself the cheaper it will be.You can probably count on labour being anywheres from $ 40-80 per hour.
And depending on how competent and familiar your mechanic is with doing an engine swap on a G Body it could take as little as one day or as much as 2-3 days.
So if I had to take a guess,a used engine could cost as little as $ 500.00 up to $ 3000.00 or more for a complete turnkey crate engine.
Labour could be $ 3-400 and up.
Then there is the "little" stuff that you will likely need, like gaskets, sealants, coolant, oil, filters, etc.
So you might get lucky and do it for $ 1000.00,but,IMO,that is unlikely, especially if you have someone else do all the work.
Best to hope that nothing goes wrong with what you have.

I'm clueless about all of this and have no need for it but I'm just wondering for down the road.

Start investing in a floor jack, jacks stands, engine hoist (borrow, rent, buy, Harbor Freight) and basic Craftsman tools and you can do a DIY engine change. Lot's of this stuff is on Craigslist, swap meets, flea markets and garage sales for 10 cents on the dollar. Don't short change yourself by thinking you have to pay someone to do this.
Go with a new crate 350 when the time comes.
I took auto shop in high school but local community colleges should have an auto repair class.

A lot of guys are doing ls swaps, should be able to find a good deal on a pull out sbc. When I did my ls swap I sold my fresh 383 complete from carb to pan with ignition/headers front accessories for $3500. I had much much more into it.

Or start reading up and pick up a complete 5.3/4l60 or 6.0/4l80 out of a 2wd truck or van, set the complete thing in the car and get the anti theft removed from the computer and run it. There's not much needed to put a new ls engine in these cars. Best hp per $.
