I bought an '86 SS a month ago and just realized the driver's side door will not lock or unlock from the outside. Luckily I have a garage to park in. Power locks work from the inside. The key I have is not an original GM and is generic. It works fine on the trunk and passenger side door. If the door is locked with the window up, I need to unlock it from the passenger side.
Has anyone ever seen this before?

Most likely you have a broken clip on the lock rod

Pull the door panel & investigate 👍

Pretty common problem because the often sagging drivers door is slammed from frequent use. Once you remove the inside door panel, you will see a series of rods with clips on the end of them. Some are hard to reach and they all seem to made by the same person who invented the Rube Goldberg style Erector Set.
A flashlight, mirror and some wiggling of the key lock back and forth will show which rod slipped off the door lock mechanism.
Incidentally, do not in any circumstances trust door locks as a secure method of locking your car. I'm glad to hear you keep it in a garage but working door locks or not is not a barrier to a determined thief.

Thanks guys. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I've read some good threads on safety measures to protect the theft of this car. What ways do you protect other than locking your doors?

If its not in my garage, I am always with it.
Do not leave it unattended in a parking lot, ever.
If for some reason I knew it would be in unattended in public view, I would Denver Boot it.
If the worst happens, I have agreed value coverage.
Consider applying for a CCW.

Locks only keep honest people honest. A thief will go to whatever extent it takes to get something. I was told years ago by a good friend to own a car that you can enjoy... not have a car that owns you. If theft is that bad and it consumes your entire life or time somewhere, to make sure nothing happens... you are not enjoying the car or your life. I grew up in a small town where everyone knew each other and what was theirs. You could leave your keys in the switch, house unlocked... the whole Mayberry thing. Times have indeed changed. But I live by the words own something, not something owning you. For peace of mind, do get agreed value insurance and enjoy her as much as possible.

I couldn't agree more. Take a lot of pictures of it.
Insure it for an agreed amount and enjoy it.
One of mine was taken in the few minutes it took me to go in and pay a bill. 7-8 minutes.
Never saw it or parts of it again.
The insurance check was nice.
Just built another one.
