i've noticed that the input shaft seal on the steering box is leaking.

is this an easy fix from the top end? or do you have to pull the box apart to rebuild/replace the seal?

Just be careful about buying a rebuilt box. Cardon, huge rebuilder just moved out of PA to hecho. The SS box is a YA, not likely to get a YA, more like this box will fit a dozen vehicles, INCLUDING the SS. No way of knowing which of the dozen 800 box donors it was from.

Installed two rebuilt AGR 800 boxes in a 67 Camaro, first one leaked.

I run an XH 800 box, spent a week rebuilding it due to leaking top and bottom. I wouldn't recommend a novice to attempt the R&R. That box is a good match for my suspension, I would't be happy with anything else, except a blueprinted 600 box.

Your original question. The seal you see at the top is just a dust shield, below that is another seal, below that are seals on the spool. Most likely spool seals are worn, seeping. Easiest to change out boxes. Check "parts for sale" here, may get lucky and find a lower mileage YA box for a reasonable here. It's a roll of the dice whether buying used or rebuilt.

Heads Up, A1 Cardone.....I am restoring a 68 Chrysler (complete resto) with a friend, he is on his 4th brake caliper from them, each one leaking worse than the originals. Get original steering gear rebuilt as you will be better off in the long run. The customer service is not acceptable as well as their technical competence.
Just trying to save you the aggravation.

Thanks for the heads up. I already ordered one from a1. I'll keep the original one and look for a place to rebuild them

The CardOne info explains why I blew two rebuilt P/S pump last Fall. Still salty over that...........Both failed in the exact spot- front seal. I'm surprised the car did not burn to the ground with that oil all over the place.
