What car/dash is this intended for?

I have a recent Kenwood Excellon 2DIN (around $250) in the family Trailblazer, and it is very decent with the $100 add-on to use the factory steering wheel controls.
It handles 18 RMS/ 50 w max x4, and there is a separate subwoofer and amp that the head unit has integrated controls.
The head unit has plenty of buttons giving you fast access to FM stations, rew/fwd, audio, phone, etc
The unit has iPhone/android controls for your MP3 and Bluetooth and a microphone for your phone. If you have Siri you can manage a huge amount of commands verbally without touching the phone.

There are many other styles/brands with flat screen controls, with layers upon layers of menu to navigate, to reach things like an EQ, bass setting, etc, taking your eyes off the road too long making it dangerous as hell to use. JMHO

Play with the head unit style you like, to see if the ergonomics are acceptable to you.
The multiple menu layers get frustrating, the joystick button is the same all commands thru one knob, etc, you have to be in the correct 'mode' or function for the buttons to do certain action, etc

$1000 should get you a very decent system.
I would suggest:
- head unit $250-350
- 2 pairs of speakers, get component speakers up front ($200-300) with a separate crossover, and some co-axial for the rear ($100-150)
- a head unit with subwoofer controls and hi/low filters will help you trim the frequencies on the smaller speakers.
- Get a matched amp/subs/box (crutchfield is very good at helping match it for you)

Even a modest setup of woofer(s), box, and matching amp for around $200 can take care of the lower notes, and make the system sound fantastic.
Of course, more can make it better, specially when matched properly.

I shop a LOT from www.crutchfield.com, they have great help in selecting your gear too, if you need.

Pick a subwoofer first, the type of sub box (sealed or ported, ported needs more space) and then match an amp to the woofer's needs.
The higher sensitivity woofer will play louder with the same amount of power.
For 3db more of sound it takes roughly double the power.
This is most relevant comparing a sub with 87db sensitivity vs a 93db sensitivity.
The 87db will need 4x the power to play as loud as the 93db.

What vehicle?

And don't shop from Crutchfield, they tend to be more expensive than other places. I use sonic electronix and hifi sound connection.
