So for the last few weeks after about 10-15 minutes of driving my check engine light comes on but no change in performance just a little smell of gas. so I thought it was possibly a bad O2 sensor or EGR valve. i replaced the o2 sensor and my car was running really rough and the check engine light was coming on dry quickly. I thought maybe I Knocked a spark plug wire loose getting to the o2 because of how rough it was running. The next day I wiggled and pressed down the spark plug wires and any plugs in the area and I started it up and it has been running great. In the process, I knocked off the temperature guage sending wire. I toyed around and plugged it back in and now my car is back to running rough and vibrating a lot. The motor is very shaky and not getting the good power or idle. I pressed down all the plugs and wires in the area and no luck. I can't figure out what is causing this. Any ideas?

The distributor, spark plugs and plug wires are about 2 years old from a tune up.

If your check engine light is coming on you need to read the codes. That will help you trouble shoot it.

X2 on codes but I suspect canister purge valve, the charcoal canister being plugged up can cause gas smell, also causing excessive vacuum buildup in fuel tank causing pump to work erracticlly in turn causing your symptoms. Have seen it before but mine got so bad caused vapor lock in the fuel system. Very bad. Bad gas cap could cause the buildup as well. I would open the gas cap when it's acting up to see if it sounded like a sucking noice or pressure was released.

The only first step that makes any kind of sense is to pull those trouble codes out of the computer. Even if the Check Engine Light isn't on presently, the codes are still stored inside the computer for (I think) 50 starts. Don't quote me on the 50 starts, but I do know it's up there somewhere.

You can pull them yourself with a paperclip, and there's instructions here on the forum somewhere for exactly how to do it, and what the codes mean.

I actually took it to the mechanic this morning, they've been good with my car, I wouldn't mind tinkering and figuring it out but the vacuum lines are a little over my head and it's my daily driver. Within the next year or 2 I'll retire it to my weekend car.

Yep, 50 starts without a code being thrown and they are cleared from the ECM memory.

3188: 32 FCB $32; 50 STARTS TO CODE RESET

That's at least for the '87/'88 SS stock PROM or ZZ4 PROM.

Of course, pulling the battery or ECM cables will immediately clear them.

There is only 5 to 6 vacuum ports, the vacuum hoses are really simple.

SBC powered 1987 Regal with TES headers, ZZ4 intake, ZZ4 PROM chip, mini starter, THM2004R, 2500 stall converter, 2040 cam, CCC system, and 3.73 posi rear.

2008 ex NPS P71 Crown Victoria, cop motor, cop shocks, cop brakes, and Jmod.

Mechanic had a hard time finding it but he said I had a bad "Map Sensor". The wire was frayed and shorting out not sending the right fuel/air mixtures.
