Been a little while since I've posted here, I've been busy.

I went through some boxes in the garage and decided to use some parts I had laying around to try a different build. I pulled the 5.3l out of the car and sold it as a complete engine with the accessories from the 6.0l I recently bought..:D

Ended up with a complete LQ4 from a 2006 Chevy 3/4 ton work van for $800, broke it down to the shortblock, cleaned it up, installed my ported & polished Melling HV Oil Pump with new LS2 Timing Chain I had gotten for free a while back that was just laying in a box..

I ended up with a set of GM 243 Heads a while back for $100 and stashed them for a rainy day, installed a set of PAC 1218 Springs on them..

These were then bolted up to the LQ4 using GM Hardware & LS2 MLS Gaskets..

Pilot Busing was installed, LS7 Clutch Kit bolted up..

Dropped it back in the car and bolted up the Headers & LS6 Intake, just waiting on the custom Cam to get here..

BUILD SPECS: PROJECT "6.HO"

GM 2006 LQ4 SHORTBLOCK
PORTED & POLISHED MELLING HV OIL PUMP, LS2 TIMING CHAIN
GM 243 HEADS WITH PAC 1218 SPRINGS, 10.4:1 COMPRESSION
GM LS6 INTAKE, FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS, STOCK THROTTLE BODY
CUSTOM CAM: 218/228, .550/.550, 113 LSA

I built the T56 and put it in a while back, it's smooth..should be fun with the 3.89 Gears in the back when I get the tune dialed in.

Custom Shifter Plate I made a while back..

Nice! I still have yet to try and learn anything about the 'new' LS based engines. They sure are the way of the present/future though cool

Actually the new LT1 engine is the future, already a crate engine is available. Although based on the LS it takes things to a new level, piston design, heads, intake, all different.

It's kinda neat to see Merv's approach to throwing something together with parts laying around and Matt's build using the "cat's meow" stuff available. I like both builds, hot rodding at it's best.

Thanks guys..I figured I would get a little early start on spring cleaning, it helped, the garage is almost bare.

These Engines make power and lots of it, this one here is a mild build in comparison to many others, using the early Gen III setup with a good computer to run it, estimated power is roughly 480HP, and that's on 91 gas all day.

Those wheels get alot of attention..didn't think they would. I put a 285 tire on the back a couple months ago, nice smooth ride.

Nice that is almost the same exact setup that I'm planning on putting in my 79 El Camino. Did you have to modify the heater box at all to mount the rear coil?

No modification necessary, just can't put that bolt in easily so I run the second to last one back on the valve cover, plus two others to keep the Coil Bracket secured to the Valve Cover.

I got it running tonight..here is a pic right before I hooked the Throttle Cable up and turned the key. 60psi hot oil pressure once it warmed up, burped the cooling system, I'll be tuning it thursday.

Ha! I must admit I am a fellow traveler on LS1 tech as well.. Different name though as I like to travel in incognito... cool

Ok, well not really.. I just chose to pick a different screen name to reflect my attitude at the time.. smile

Nice Progress Merv! Thanks for sharing... Keep it up!

Matt

Looking good, Merv. I used your build thread on LS1 Tech as a guide for my LS2 swap.

Thanks. I figured that thread would help a bunch of people out, tried to make it as detailed as I could.

I've been dialing in the tune on the car, couple small things to work out, so far plenty of power..

It seems to work so far, been in the car since Jan 2011 with no issues. How's it working for you?

Works good. My stock tank seemed to have a little baffle in the tank directly behind the sending unit, I dont know if all carb tanks are like this but I have yet to have any starvation issues.

Did you get the 6.0 all tuned in?

The factory carb tanks have very little baffle in them. The EFI tanks have a little "dogbowl" in the bottom of them. Doesn't sound like much but it seems to be there for a reason.

I have it about 90%..just working out the small bugs when I have the time. It has PLENTY of power..the 5.3l in it wasn't shabby at all but this here is a whole different animal.
