This post is for improved dash lighting. It shows how to take dash apart and put it back together. Pics around 7, 8, 9 and 10 show the shift indicator. I think you slip it back in after the gauge panel is in place. Hope it helps.

The bottom one looks good, you need the cable that runs to the steering column ring. It may still be attached to the column.

I wouldn't use either shift indicator if there is a worn thru "slot" where the cable travels around-eventually this binds up the cable and can shred it prematurely. Look for a nice one and periodically grease that part of the shift indicator with a lithium grease.

I could be corrected, but I think the ses is not connected to the dash cluster from asignal standpoint. Best course of action here is to read the code. AutoZone has a 30$ tool that can do it or just jumper a couple of terminals on the box under the dash on the driver side near the radio. Throw the found code up here or in Google search to find the answer. The AutoZone tool has a code book if you go that route

Do you know how to pull an OBD1 engine code? If there's several minutes before throwing a code, I'd guess a poor O2 sensor code which should be a 13 if memory serves me correct.

Did you have any trouble with the "Check Engine" light prior to originally removing the Instrument Panel (I/P) when you first started?

Unplug your ECM and plug it back in. This will reset all codes stored. You will be starting fresh.
I believe you can also unplug your battery cables to accomplish the same result. You can also unplug both, it won't hurt anything and will reset(wipe out) stored codes.

Try this and let us know how you make out. This would be a good first step. It is what I would do if I had the problem.
