Im looking for new/used door for my -85 SS. Whats the difference between 81-85 and 86-88 Monte Carlo doors?

Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the difference is the location of the holes in the door for the mirror. I believe the 81-85 were mounted further back than the 86-up mirrors.

I have 81-85 doors on my 86. Mirror location is the only difference.

We took an 85 door, filled in the hole, drilled a new hole, moved the mirror backing support plate and had an 88 door.

Reviving this thread, Does anyone here have an opinion on where the ideal mirror placement is? Would you rather see the mirrors in the forward most location or further back as in the 81-85 doors? I personally like the 81-85 style rounded mirrors but I haven't drove an 86+ year car to know how the difference in mirror placement effects driving or vision. I am in the process of possibly buying new door shells and would like some input, this is for an 84ss.

The further forward '86 style is better. Besides being larger, it doesn't require as much of a head or eye movement to look at it.

Could you use the round mirrors on the 86 doors without there being fitment issues or the mirror mounted in an awkward angle?

Hmm, it's been 10 years since I have seen a set of bare '86 doors but to the best of my memory, the mounting studs for the Aero mirrors will not line up with the mounting holes for the lollipop mirrors.
Some body work will be needed to make them fit.
This question has been asked before, I am sure someone with a higher pay grade will verify my comments...
MikesMontes will know for sure.

Do they sit correctly it modified? I'm thinking about using the newer doors and modification isn't a problem, I just don't want them to sit at a weird angle or look out of place.

If you are going to use the newer doors then also use the newer mirrors, you will thank me later.
I have an 87 and my wife has an 85. I hate driving hers due to the mirrors.

I'm the opposite. I have '85 Monte SS and '87 El Camino and hate the ones on the Camino. Have bought the sport mirrors, both with remote cables. I haven't done the swap yet, so not sure on how it's going to work out.

Im pretty interested in trying to swap old style mirrors to the new style doors and mod the mirrors to lower them closer to the door to have them fit tighter looking. Im not sure how this will turn out but I think it could look pretty good if done correctly

I think the older mirrors on the newer doors would look better than the new mirrors on older doors, those seem to jump out at me and look out of place.
