I'd like to take my old 305 up to norwalk and see what it runs, when I do takeoffs on the street I get a little one wheel peel all the way through first and then a squeal when it shifts into second. Posi traction is the only thing holding me back from going....

It was fun beating a few cars with a lot more power, i beat a restored 71 Monte with 330+hp 350 in it twice then he finally got me, then his trans broke lol.i had an lt1 Trans am until half track, third gear looks like I'm just cruising on video. I won off the line every time except when i got in the oil, after that they blew my doors off lol good news is i got to take wife down once and she wants me to get whatever i need to go faster haha

Made it back with my throttle bracket locked in, new spectre filter. Ran 14.7, 14.6, 14.5 14.6 @93-94 mph. Car fell flat off the line three times on me, not sure what's up, and four times i couldn't hook up at all ran high 15s. Gotta figure out stumble problem and get posi

.. You would prolly need a 4.33 or 4.56 rear end to get 3rd gear to perform really well in the quarter...

.. well, actually, it might even take a 5.38 rear to RPM out good in 3rd by the end of the quarter! Depending on rear tire diameter...

305 heads just run out of steam @ that trap speed in 3rd gear....most people are content with starting conservative off the line and pulling strong at the top end. I remember back in the day after a head swap and some 3.73's in a posi carrier I thought I was king of the street! Lol. A grey primered 78 Monte killing every car it seemed.....lol fun times.

Well i got a ridiculous score and now have a fully setup 8.5 with 4.10 gears sitting in garage so after its in I might throw a nos sniper kit at it and finish off the 305 before i tear car down and drop in a new engine this winter

.. Looks like a 3.73 rear has you turning about a sluggish 4500 at end of 1/4 in 3rd with stock tire size... a 4.10 maybe 5000... so it would help... a rear that gives 5500-6000 would prolly be even better for 3rd gear acceleration... depending on what RPMs your power falls off at... that Summit #1103 214/224 cam should pull well through 6000 and even above, although, as Jabin/GMachinz mentioned, those stock 305 heads are going to have trouble keeping up... are the tires 255-50R15's? 255-60R15's? 255-50R16's?

.. With my Monte LS with about 2.73 rear I pretty much finish the 1/4 in 2nd gear no matter what size engine I use... an old 2-speed Chevy PowerGlide auto tranny would work as well... LOL!

.. 27" tall tires.. that also lessens your effective rear end ratio... ending 1/4 at a theoretical 4300 RPMs... depending on converter slippage... a 5.38 rear and those tires would let 3rd finish 1/4 about 6300 RPMs... maybe 6500+ with converter slippage and benefits of more acceleration... LOL!

But i only have a 3 speed trans. But my motors are making
Great power!
But years ago i had a warmed up 305 and 700r4 with 3.73s
And it ran good.but always thought it would been better
With 4.10 or 4.56

I have 4.10's with a 27" tire and 200-4r. Highway cruising is great and if I was only going to drace 1/8th and not street drive it I would probably run a 4.56. I stay in 3rd in the 1/4 mile with no issues. I wouldn't be scared of them.

.. Looks like you could now blow away any stock Monte SS which runs about 16 seconds and 80+ or so in 1/4...

.. Just depends on what you want to use the car for... 3.73 is a fun overall street/light street/strip performance gear... and a 5.7L/350" would pull it better than a 5.0L/305"... serious 1/4 mile track work requires more gear... serious 1/8 work requires even still more gear...
