I bought a rear axle and can't find the code listed anywhere. It's 9TZ C085 2. Anyone know what this is? It's supposed to be out of a 1986 SS.

I spun the pinion and it goes around approximately 3.75 times to the 1 time the axle turns. Both axles spin.

Sounds like a 3.73:1 Posi. The ratio is stock for an '86 SS and the Posi was an option. I can't help with the codes but your info is fairly conclusive.

Can you tell if it's a 7.5 or 8.5 dia. and my chart doesn't show that code for any Gbody. Where did that code come from?

.. 1980's Montes were all 7 1/2" rears... some 1980's Hurst Olds, 442's, and GN's came with stronger 8 1/2" rears of 3.42 and rarer 3.73 ratios...

.. Click on 'drivetrain' and set your 'Display Options' to go back a few years instead of just the default one week and there should be postings with pictures showing the differences in external apprearance between 7 1/2" and 8 1/2" rears...

Yes I have one of each from a 84 Hurst Olds and the other from a T-Type Regal in the 8.5. I think one has aluminum drums but both are non-posi and hard to find.

only G-body 8.5's: 1984 to 1987 GN's(3.42 gears), 1985 to 1988 Olds 442(3.73 gears), & the 84 Hurst Olds(3.73 gears)

Thanks for the suggestion. I found an old posting and the guy had a 9TY. It's a non posi 3.73.

I took the cover off and it is definitly a 7.5" 3.73. Not sure if this is an open rear or limited slip.

Found a picture online, it's a limited slip.
